Custom Wheelchair Seating

For individuals with challenging physical disabilities, nothing is more important than the comfort and support that their wheelchair provides. UDS understands the complex seating and positioning needs that standard off-the-shelf seating can't address. Proper head and body support is often critical to accommodate irregular musculoskeletal asymmetries and to prevent painful pressure sores. A well-designed custom seating system can contribute greatly to the overall health and wellbeing of someone with unique disability needs.

We are specialists
We have over 20 years experience innovating and fabricating life-enhancing adaptive seating for clients, young and old. That's why we are a leading resource for therapists, individuals, families, and caregivers throughout Central Pennsylvania. Creating an effective wheelchair seating system for an individual with unique physical needs involves the integration of many components.

Custom Seating System Components -
  • Molded orthotic back
  • Padded hip belt
  • Trunk support
  • Abductor pommel
  • Adjustable head support
  • Carved positioning seat
  • Shoulder harness
  • Foot box
  • Elbow blocks and tray

  • Our process
    • Evaluation - It begins with professional evaluation and measurement at a residential facility, school, hospital, therapy center, or at our Lancaster facility. For each client we measure, design, and specify all the necessary components; working closely with the therapist, family, caregiver and the vendor of the custom wheelchair frame. The team performs a comprehensive assessment of the individual's physical needs starting with medical history, range of motion, anatomical measurements, and orthopedic concerns.
    • Approval - The UDS seating specialist then writes a detailed Letter of Medical Necessity for the insurance carrier justifying each component being specified. If they agree that the individual would benefit from a custom wheelchair seating system, we start the design and fabrication process.
    • Fit and fabrication - Wearing everyday clothing, the client is positioned on a specially designed beanbag-like device that precisely contours to the shape of the individual. Accurate molds of the seat and the back are created by applying a vacuum. A digitized 3-D computerized image is used to carve the seat and back to the exact size and shape of the individual. We can even custom carve the seat out of multiple layers of high-density foam. A variety of seat coverings are available to meet specific requirements.
    • Delivery - At the time of delivery, a final fitting at your location or our Lancaster facility allows for minor adjustments to ensure optimal comfort and utility. The result is a remarkably effective custom seating system that addresses the client's unique medical, positioning and comfort needs.

    Pressure-mapping
Another useful tool we offer in the field or at our Custom Wheelchair Seating facility is pressure mapping. Using the XSensor Pressure Mapping system, our specialists can assess the pressure distribution under the client as they sit on the sensor mat. The full-color computer image shows the areas with the highest and lowest pressures. Individualized reports and recommendations to reduce the incidence of pressure sores can be sent to the client's physician, therapist, clinic, and insurance carrier.
